Erdogan: The United Nations must be fair and accountable
In his message on the occasion of 24 October, United Nations Day, and the 81st anniversary of the founding of the organization, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan emphasized the need to reform the structure of the Security Council and called for the formation of a council that is fairer, more inclusive, and more accountable to the expectations of the global community.
In his message, Erdogan referred to wars, humanitarian crises, climate change, hunger, poverty, racism, xenophobia, and Islamophobia, and wrote that the core mission of the United Nations has not only not lost its importance but has become more essential.
Referring to developments in Gaza and the killing of more than 74,000 people in the region, along with other crises and conflicts in the world, he considered immediate reform of the Security Council structure necessary.
The Turkish president also called on countries around the world to strengthen support for the UN Charter and to support the necessary reforms to increase the effectiveness of the organization’s main bodies.
Erdogan further announced Turkey’s support for the “UN80” initiative of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and said that Ankara is working closely with the organization to make Istanbul one of the important centers of UN activities.
