PKK Lays Down Its Weapons in Iraq Today
Today marks a historic phase in the “Terror-Free Turkey” process. After 41 years of conflict, the PKK has begun surrendering its weapons according to a scheduled plan. The official disarmament ceremony will take place today at 10:00 AM in the Dukan area of Sulaymaniyah Province, Iraq.
The event was planned discreetly, and media outlets are not permitted to broadcast it live. Reports indicate that only a limited number of journalist groups have been invited to the area.
The disarmament process will be carried out gradually in several stages. In the first phase, 30 PKK members will hand over their weapons. The Turkish National Intelligence Organization (MIT) and the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) will closely monitor the process to ensure its authenticity.
The collected weapons will be destroyed immediately, with no permission granted for transfer to a third country. Subsequently, PKK’s logistical camps and bases will also be dismantled.
Members without criminal records will be allowed to return to Turkey and will not face legal prosecution. This decision follows recent statements by imprisoned PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan and approval from Turkish authorities.
This event comes after months of behind-the-scenes negotiations and President Erdoğan’s emphasis on resolving security issues on the “home front.”
