Iranian Foreign Ministry: Iran, Pakistan, and Turkey Have a History of Cooperation
Ismail Baghaei, spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, addressed the revival of trilateral agreements among Iran, Pakistan, and Turkey during the weekly press briefing. This issue had been raised during the recent visit of Iran’s president to Islamabad.
Referring to the historical background of this cooperation, Baghaei stated: “These three countries were among the founders of the Regional Cooperation for Development (RCD) in the 1960s, particularly in 1964, which was later transformed into the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) in 1985.” He emphasized that this cooperation not only has a long-standing history but is also defined within an institutional and regional framework.
The Foreign Ministry spokesperson added: “The primary focus of this cooperation was initially on economic development among member states. However, if successful in this area, it could expand into political, security, and cultural fields as well.”
Baghaei further elaborated on the details of the president’s visit to Pakistan, noting: “During this trip, 12 documents were signed between the two countries in economic, trade, tourism, customs, and cultural sectors. Additionally, the Iran-Pakistan Cultural Agreement, which has a 50-year history, was renewed.” He also mentioned a preliminary decision on establishing a free trade agreement between the two countries, though details require further negotiations.
