Turkish and US Presidents Discuss Regional Developments in Phone Call
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and US President Donald Trump held a telephone call to discuss recent regional developments, particularly in Syria and Gaza.
During the call, which took place at the request of the American side, Erdoğan emphasized Ankara’s close monitoring of the situation in Syria and the importance Turkey places on preserving Syria’s territorial integrity and unity. The two leaders also exchanged views on joint cooperation in the fight against the terrorist group ISIS (DAESH) and the situation of ISIS-affiliated detainees in Syrian prisons.
The Turkish President informed his American counterpart that Ankara would continue its coordination with Washington regarding the Gaza issue and expressed his appreciation for Trump’s invitation to participate in the “Peace Council for Gaza.”
This call occurred at a time when the Syrian government has recently retaken control of some areas in the country’s northeast from Kurdish armed groups and has given the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) a four-day deadline to integrate into the central government structure. It appears that Washington, the primary supporter of the SDF, has been reconsidering its approach toward this group.
