Ankara’s Strong Reaction to Israel’s Attack on the Aid Ship Madelin

Ankara – June 12, 2025

The Turkish government has issued a strongly-worded statement condemning Israel’s military attack on the aid ship Madelin, which was en route to the Gaza Strip, calling the act a “clear violation of international law” and demanding an immediate response from the global community.

Official Condemnation from the Turkish Defense Ministry

According to Anadolu Agency, the Turkish Ministry of National Defense described the attack as “inhumane and devoid of any legal justification,” stating:
“The actions of Israeli forces in targeting a vessel carrying humanitarian aid constitute a blatant violation of international law, particularly humanitarian law. This act cannot go unanswered.”

Call for an Immediate Ceasefire and Lifting of the Blockade

Ankara also released a separate statement calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the removal of all obstacles preventing humanitarian aid from reaching the crisis-stricken region. The appeal has received support from several Islamic countries and international organizations.

Humanitarian and Legal Dimensions of the Incident

The Madelin, a Panama-flagged ship, was part of an international humanitarian convoy carrying medicine, medical supplies, and food for Palestinian civilians in Gaza. Reports indicate damage to the ship’s hull and injuries among some crew members.

Background of Tensions and Reactions

The incident comes as the humanitarian situation in Gaza has reportedly worsened due to ongoing clashes and a tight blockade, with international organizations warning of the risk of a large-scale humanitarian catastrophe.
