Turkey and Indonesia Sign Export Deal for Fifth-Generation “Kaan” Fighter Jet
Jakarta – June 12, 2025
In one of the most significant developments at the Indonesia International Defense Industry Exhibition, the Turkish government successfully signed the first export contract for its indigenous fifth-generation “Kaan” fighter jet with Indonesia. The deal is reported to be worth approximately $10 billion.
Under the agreement, Ankara has committed to delivering 48 Kaan fighter jets to the Indonesian Air Force over a multi-year period. The contract also includes the transfer of advanced technology to the Southeast Asian nation’s military and defense industry.
A Historic First in Turkish Aerospace
This deal marks the first official sale of Turkey’s domestically developed fifth-generation fighter and represents a milestone in the country’s defense industry history. Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI), the developer of the Kaan project, emphasized that this agreement is not only a commercial success but also a major step in elevating Turkey’s brand in the global aerospace and defense market.
Strategic Dimensions of the Partnership
Indonesian officials described the agreement as a “long-term strategic partnership.” A portion of the fighter jet’s production and maintenance technology will be transferred to Indonesia’s defense industry, fostering the development of technical infrastructure, increasing employment, and enhancing the country’s military self-sufficiency.
A Response to Regional Needs and Geopolitical Shifts
Defense analysts suggest that the deal is designed to address rising regional threats in Southeast Asia and the arms race among major powers. It could shift the balance of air power in the region in Indonesia’s favor.
Key Features of the Kaan Fighter Jet
Equipped with stealth capabilities, indigenous radar systems, combat readiness in diverse weather conditions, and integrated artificial intelligence systems, the Kaan is being touted as a serious competitor to the U.S.-made F-35 in the international market.
