Approximately 23,000 workers go on strike in Izmir Metropolitan Municipality
Members of the General-Union of Municipal Workers in Izmir gathered in front of the Metropolitan Municipality Services Building at the Kültürpark fairgrounds.
The workers, holding torches, chanted various slogans and performed the traditional halay dance before putting up a banner that read, “This workplace is on strike.”
Union branch leaders and workers then hung the banner on the municipal building.
Arjan Gül, head of Branch 2 of the Izmir General-Union, announced in a speech at the site that around 23,000 workers had begun their strike as of midnight the previous night.
Emphasizing that they would continue their struggle side by side, he said:
“We did not come here to cause chaos, but to fight for a better livelihood. Everyone must be wise and support this struggle. We will not allow anyone to harm this place. We will continue our fight until we secure what we deserve.”
Serap Yılmaz, head of Branch 3 of the Izmir General-Union, also declared that they would keep resisting until workers receive the wages they rightfully deserve.
