Diyarbakır Police Intervene Over Banners Supporting İmamoğlu
Following the installation of banners supporting Ekrem İmamoğlu, the Republican People’s Party (CHP) candidate in Turkey’s presidential elections, police forces in Diyarbakır intervened.
The banners, hung on the city’s historic walls, carried slogans such as “Azadi İmamoğlu” (in Kurdish) and “Free İmamoğlu” (in English). The action was organized by members of the CHP’s Bağlar district branch.
This morning, a group of party activists gathered near the Mardin Gate in the Suriçi district, chanting “Justice, Law, Rights” as they put up the banners. They later planned to install them in the symbolic location of İçkale (the Inner Fortress).
With the police intervention, the installation was halted, and several individuals—including Bağlar District Chair Çiğdem Özturan Kurt, Deputy Provincial Chair Ramzi Sork, and senior party official Recep Yavuz—were detained. They were taken to police stations for legal procedures.
İmamoğlu, the former mayor of Istanbul, who has long been recognized as a reformist figure, is currently imprisoned in Silivri’s Marmara Prison. His supporters consider his detention a political move.
