Erdoğan and Pezeshkian meet on the sidelines of the Shanghai Summit
Within the framework of the 25th Summit of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization member countries, held in the city of Tianjin, China, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan met and held talks on Tuesday.
In the meeting, which was attended by Turkey’s Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Energy, Treasury, Defense, Industry, and Trade, as well as the Head of the Presidency’s Directorate of Communications, the two leaders exchanged views on bilateral relations as well as regional and global developments.
The main topics of discussion included the latest situation in Syria, Israel’s attacks on Gaza, and the peace process in the South Caucasus. Erdoğan emphasized the importance of Tehran–Ankara cooperation, particularly in the field of energy, described Iran’s participation in the nuclear negotiations as beneficial, and reaffirmed Turkey’s continued support for Iran in this regard.
Pezeshkian, referring to the upcoming Iran–Turkey High-Level Cooperation Council meeting to be hosted in Tehran, expressed hope that Erdoğan would visit Iran in the near future. The Turkish President responded that the necessary coordination would be carried out by his Foreign Minister in consultation with his Iranian counterpart.
