Expansion of Terrorist Groups Tunnel Network in Syria–Turkey Border Areas
The activities of the terrorist organization PKK/YPG in the provinces of Raqqa, Aleppo, and Deir ez-Zor have increased significantly. Known in Syria as the “Syrian Democratic Forces,” this group threatens the safety and lives of civilians by establishing logistical supply lines and underground tunnels.
Following the suspension of the Paris talks by Damascus, the terrorist organization PKK/YPG has expanded its presence in border areas with Turkey and along contact lines with Syrian government forces by holding meetings in al-Hasakah. The group has reinforced its positions by laying mines along the border and creating three fortified defensive lines in Aleppo, Raqqa, and along the banks of the Euphrates River.
In the underground tunnels built in Aleppo, Raqqa, and along the Euphrates River, various light and heavy weapons, armored vehicles, artillery, and suicide drones have been deployed. These tunnels are used not only for moving personnel and equipment and concealing positions, but also as shelters and command centers.
Experts warn that due to the soft soil and high groundwater levels in Raqqa, the presence of these tunnels beneath sensitive structures — including hospitals, schools, and government buildings — poses a serious risk of collapse and destruction. A water resources expert states that even a mild earthquake or any explosion could cause the sudden collapse of these buildings, leading to extensive damage and significant loss of life.
