F-16 Fighter Jet Crashes in Balıkesir, Turkish Pilot Martyred
An F-16 fighter jet belonging to Turkey’s Balıkesir 9th Main Jet Base crashed moments after takeoff, resulting in the death of its pilot.
Balıkesir Governor İsmail Ustaoğlu confirmed the news on platform X, stating: “One of our pilots has been martyred. I ask for God’s mercy for our martyr and patience for his family. I offer my condolences to our dear nation.”
The Governor, who immediately went to the crash site in the Kayapa area on the Izmir-Istanbul highway, said: “The fighter jet crashed shortly after takeoff. We are currently at the scene, and the investigation process is being closely monitored.”
Following the incident, the Izmir-Istanbul highway in the Kayapa region of the Karacabey district was closed to traffic, and emergency and technical response teams were deployed to the area.
Turkey’s Ministry of National Defense also issued a statement, announcing: “Radio contact and tracking data were lost with an F-16 that had taken off from the Balıkesir 9th Main Jet Base at 00:56 AM. Search and rescue operations were initiated immediately, and it was determined that the aircraft had suffered an accident. The wreckage of the plane has been found, and our pilot has been martyred. The cause of the incident will be announced following an investigation by a specialized team.”
Turkey’s Minister of Justice, Yılmaz Tunç, also reported that a judicial investigation has been launched into the matter. He stated: “The Balıkesir Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office has initiated an investigation, and the Chief Public Prosecutor, his deputy, and two public prosecutors have been dispatched to the scene.”
Expressing his condolences to the family of the martyred pilot, he wished patience and fortitude for the Turkish Armed Forces.
