Political tensions in Turkey have escalated once again following the arrest of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s main political rival on charges of “corruption and aiding a terrorist group.”
Turkish media reported that authorities detained Ekrem İmamoğlu, the Mayor of Istanbul from the Republican People’s Party (CHP), who is recognized as Erdoğan’s primary political opponent, on Wednesday on charges of corruption and assisting a terrorist organization. This incident has been described by the opposition party as “an attempt to stage a coup against the future president of Turkey.”

The people of Istanbul launched widespread protests against the detention of Ekrem İmamoğlu. It appears that this government action may lead to the formation of a new wave of opposition against the Erdoğan administration.
