Fidan: We are opposed to any U.S. military operation against Iran
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, in clear terms, declared his country’s opposition to any U.S. military action against Iran and emphasized the necessity of creating a path for serious negotiations between the two sides.
On this matter, he said: “Turkey is opposed to any U.S. military operation against Iran, particularly the persistent threats and increased military presence in the region.”
Warning against the escalation of tensions, Fidan stated: “A feeling of being besieged could push Iran towards the worst possible scenarios.”
Addressing American officials, he added: “I advise my American friends not to do this. Do not turn the situation into another Venezuela. Sanctions have heavily damaged Iran’s economy and fueled protests.”
Responding to a question about the possibility of a change in Iran’s regime due to external pressure, the Turkish Foreign Minister said: “I do not believe in a regime change, and I do not think what is happening in Iran is towards a regime change, nor that Iran itself has such a desire.”
Stating that Iran is ready to negotiate, Fidan clarified: “A suitable path for negotiations must be created. If they feel cornered, they will resort to the worst scenarios.” Noting that if there is sincere intention, there is an opportunity for resolution, he pointed to a similar situation between Iran and the U.S., akin to Russia-Ukraine relations.
The Turkish Foreign Minister announced Ankara’s readiness to participate in an international peacekeeping force in the Gaza Strip and said that if an agreement is reached, they would not rule out deploying troops.
He added: “This action is conditional upon reaching an agreement among the relevant countries. Turkey has repeatedly shown its willingness to participate in the Gaza peace plan, takes part in the Peace Council, and provides extensive humanitarian aid.”
Concluding, Fidan described Donald Trump as the only party capable of exerting effective pressure on Israel and called on Washington to play a more effective role in stopping human rights violations in Gaza.
