Opening of the Igdir-Nakhchivan Gas Pipeline: A Strategic Step in Turkey-Azerbaijan Energy Cooperation
This project has been implemented to enhance the energy security of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic and deepen strategic cooperation between the two countries.
Technical Specifications and Project Capacity
The 85-kilometer Igdir-Nakhchivan Gas Pipeline transports natural gas from Turkey’s eastern Igdir province to the Sadarak region of Nakhchivan. The pipeline’s initial capacity is 500 million cubic meters per year, with the potential to increase it to 730 million cubic meters in the future. The project was carried out in collaboration with Turkey’s BOTAŞ and Azerbaijan’s SOCAR.
Strategic Goals and Significance
Before the construction of this pipeline, Nakhchivan supplied its natural gas needs through a swap agreement with Iran. With the commissioning of this project, Nakhchivan will now have direct access to Azerbaijani gas via Turkey, reducing energy dependence and enhancing regional energy security.

Statements from the Presidents
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stated during the opening ceremony:
“The inauguration of the Igdir-Nakhchivan Natural Gas Pipeline will guarantee Nakhchivan’s energy security for many years to come. Turkey and Azerbaijan are determined to implement joint projects to ensure peace and increase prosperity and stability in the region.”
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev described the project as a significant milestone in the history of friendship and brotherhood between the two countries, emphasizing:
“Gas and oil pipelines have not only brought our countries closer but have also transformed Eurasia’s energy map and landscape.”
Future Outlook
The opening of this pipeline will not only meet Nakhchivan’s energy needs but also symbolizes the strategic energy cooperation between Turkey and Azerbaijan. This project could pave the way for further joint ventures in other sectors, such as electricity and transportation, contributing to greater stability and prosperity in the region.
