Plan to Establish a Terror-Free Turkey Commission in the Turkish Parliament
Abdullah Güler, the Parliamentary Group Leader of Turkey’s Justice and Development Party (AK Party), announced his party’s plans to establish a special commission in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) titled “Terror-Free Turkey.” This commission will be tasked with overseeing the permanent disarmament of terrorist groups, the dissolution of organizations such as the PKK, and strengthening coordination with security forces.
In a statement to Anadolu Agency, Güler explained that the commission will have the authority to review, approve, and document the disarmament process of terrorist groups. Additionally, it will submit legal and administrative proposals to the Speaker of the Parliament when necessary.
Representatives from all political parties in the Turkish Parliament, including independents, may participate in this commission. The number of members is expected to be between 22 and 35, similar to other parliamentary inquiry commissions.
Speaker of the Parliament Numan Kurtulmuş has requested proposals from other political parties. Güler stated that consultation meetings will be held soon.
Unlike standard specialized committees, this commission will determine its own working methods and submit its findings to the Parliament in the form of monitoring reports and recommendations. While its structure may partially resemble Turkey’s Constitutional Reconciliation Commission, its operational principles will differ.
