Turkey and UK Sign Agreement for Typhoon Fighter Jet Purchase
Turkish Defense Minister Yaşar Güler and his British counterpart John Healey emphasized strengthening defense cooperation between the two countries during a meeting in Istanbul. This document establishes an official basis for Turkey’s potential purchase of Typhoon fighter jets and its inclusion in the aircraft’s user club. Both sides agreed to continue technical negotiations to finalize the contract as soon as possible.
This agreement could enhance Turkey’s airpower against regional threats and serve as an alternative to the delayed delivery of U.S.-made F-16s. The Turkey-UK cooperation reflects a consolidation of defense ties within NATO, though approval from other Eurofighter partners (Germany, Italy, and Spain) is still required. This step deepens Ankara and London’s defense relations post-Brexit and paves the way for future military-industrial collaboration.
The two countries described this agreement as the beginning of a new chapter in defense partnership. If finalized, Turkey will become the second non-European NATO ally—after Saudi Arabia—to gain access to these fighter jets.
