Turkish Foreign and Defense Ministers Meet Syrian President in Damascus
A high-level delegation from Turkey, consisting of Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, National Defense Minister Yaşar Güler, and National Intelligence Organization (MIT) Director İbrahim Kalın, arrived today in Damascus, the capital of Syria, as part of an official working visit.
According to sources from the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the delegation will meet and hold talks with Syrian President Ahmed Shar’ and other senior officials of the country during the visit.
In the upcoming negotiations, the political, economic, and security dimensions of bilateral relations over the past year will be comprehensively reviewed. The implementation of the March 10 Agreement, considered a priority for Turkey’s national security, is also on the agenda.
The parties are expected to discuss security threats arising from Israeli actions in southern Syria and possible measures to counter their consequences. Joint cooperation to prevent the resurgence of the terrorist group ISIS and an assessment of Damascus’s role in the international coalition against ISIS will also be among the key topics.
Beyond security issues, joint projects for Syria’s reconstruction and support for the government’s institutional capacity-building efforts will be addressed. Simultaneously with this visit, Deputy Foreign Minister Nuh Yılmaz, who was recently appointed as Turkey’s ambassador to Damascus, will also travel to Syria.
