Turkish Foreign Minister Meets with Syrian President in Damascus
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan met with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Damascus today during an official working visit. The meeting took place within the framework of ongoing dialogue between the two countries.
According to sources from the Turkish Foreign Ministry, the two sides reviewed developments in bilateral relations following the change in Syria’s government. They also emphasized strengthening joint cooperation in various fields.
The discussions addressed cooperation between Turkey and Syria in combating terrorist groups, including ISIS and the PKK/YPG. Another key topic was Turkey’s security concerns regarding developments in northeastern Syria.
The impact of Israel’s actions and statements on Syria’s and the region’s security was also discussed. Both sides stressed the importance of maintaining high-level diplomatic exchanges between the two countries.
Coordination on Syria’s reconstruction programs was another point of discussion. Prior to this visit, Fidan had traveled to Syria twice before—on December 22, 2024, and March 13—accompanied by Turkey’s defense minister and intelligence chief.
Over the past eight months, Bashar al-Assad and Syria’s foreign minister have also made several visits to Turkey. Previous meetings focused on Syria’s security situation, political stability, economic issues, and Turkey’s support.
