A Look at the History of Turkey’s Foreign Policy and Relations with Neighbors
The history of Turkey’s foreign relations reflects various ups and downs, in such a way that Turkey’s foreign policy has been directly derived from the course of its domestic politics. Observing the dynamics of domestic and foreign politics, one can witness behavioral diversity due to profound changes in the structure of domestic politics. Since its establishment as a republic in 1923, Turkey has constantly faced major challenges such as military coups. Accordingly, the behavior of its foreign policy also reflects the repercussions of these changes. Nevertheless, examining Turkey’s foreign policy behavior is of fundamental importance for Iran due to regional conditions. The aim of this article is to provide an overview of the course of Turkey’s foreign policy in the region, particularly its relations with neighboring states. For this purpose, the research method employed is descriptive, and by relying on reliable data, we seek to present a realistic analysis of the trajectory of Turkey’s foreign policy regarding its neighbors. Ultimately, Turkey’s foreign policy has been a function of the course of its domestic politics, and a historical perspective on this issue clearly demonstrates this fact.
