Efforts to Control Forest Fires in Turkey Continue
In the first three weeks of July, forest fires broke out in various regions of Turkey, causing significant damage. Local authorities and security forces are meticulously investigating the causes of these fires.
Large-Scale Fire in Eskişehir and Village Evacuations
The forest fire that started yesterday in Seyitgazi district of Eskişehir continues to spread. Firefighting teams are working to bring the flames under control through aerial and ground interventions. Due to shifting wind directions and the rapid spread of flames, the village of Sarıçayır in Afyonkarahisar was evacuated as a precaution.
Fire Situation in Other Provinces
Multiple fires were also reported in Balıkesir, Manisa, and Bilecik, with some already extinguished thanks to the efforts of emergency teams. In Sakarya’s Akyazı district, a fire was brought under control after hours of nighttime operations. The support of civil society organizations and local residents played a crucial role in combating the flames.
Causes of the Fires and Arrests
Preliminary investigations indicate that most fires were human-caused, resulting from negligence such as careless use of agricultural machinery, open flames in forests, and vehicle malfunctions. So far, 23 suspects have been detained, four of whom were referred to court while the rest were released on bail or under judicial supervision.
Statement from the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry
Minister of Agriculture and Forestry İbrahim Yumaklı visited the affected areas and praised the relentless efforts of emergency teams. Addressing the firefighters, he stated:
“This country needs your dedication. Each one of you plays a vital role in preserving this nature.”
