Germany approves sale of 40 Eurofighter Typhoon jets to Turkey
The German government has granted preliminary approval for Turkey’s request to purchase 40 Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets. The decision was made during a confidential meeting of Germany’s Federal Security Council.
According to reports, these jets will be produced by a consortium of British, German, Italian, and Spanish companies, with final assembly taking place in the UK. Some of the required components will also be supplied from Germany.
Turkey submitted its request to purchase these jets in March 2023. Previously, Ankara’s efforts to buy F-16 fighter jets from the U.S. had stalled due to political disputes in Congress.
Some reports suggest that Germany’s decision was made under pressure from the UK. German media also stated that prior to this approval, coordination had been made with Greece, another NATO member that has tense relations with Turkey.
Turkey has guaranteed that it will use these jets solely within the framework of NATO missions. Meanwhile, Greece recently received 24 Rafale fighter jets from France.
This agreement could mark a new step in defense relations between Turkey and Germany, as Berlin had previously imposed restrictions on arms sales to Ankara.
