The 21st extraordinary congress of the Republican People’s Party: Ozgur Ozel was re-elected as the supreme chairman
The Republican People’s Party held its 21st extraordinary congress to prevent the appointment of a caretaker to the party, and Ozgur Ozel was re-elected as the party leader. In this congress, which had 1323 registered delegates, Ozel managed to secure 1171 votes, while 105 votes were declared invalid.
In this congress, a special seat was allocated for Ekrem Imamoglu, the dismissed mayor of Istanbul and the party’s former presidential candidate. In a message on social media, Imamoglu expressed his honor in accompanying this challenging path and wished success to Ozgur Ozel and the congress delegates.

Former party leaders, including Kemal Kilicdaroglu, Altan Oymen, Hikmet Cetin, and Murat Karayalcin, were also present at the congress. Ozgur Ozel began his speech by sending greetings to imprisoned politicians and those detained during the Gezi protests, recalling the resistance of tens of millions against the March 9 coup. He also paid tribute to those unlawfully detained, including members of the city council in Silivri prison and detainees of the Gezi case.
In this congress, 1368 party delegates voted to elect members of the 60-member Party Assembly and the Supreme Disciplinary Council. Ozgur Ozel had previously dismissed allegations of vote-buying during the party’s 38th congress as baseless and announced that an extraordinary congress would be held to prevent the appointment of a caretaker.
