Özgür Özel’s First Public Appearance After the Punch Attack
CHP leader Özgür Özel met with members of the Istanbul Chamber of Industry (ISO) today and shared his views for the first time since the physical assault he suffered last Sunday.
When asked whether security measures had been increased following the attack, Özel replied, “We continue working with the same security team; there have been no changes in this regard. We are not cowards, and we are carrying on with our programs as before.”
He also mentioned the public’s warm reception on the streets, explaining that delays in some of his events were due to frequent requests from citizens for photos and selfies.
Harsh Criticism of the Government: “You Ruined the Economy”
In another part of his speech, Özel criticized the Turkish government’s economic policies, saying, “Suddenly, everything fell apart. Small businesses, which account for $86 billion in exports, are now facing reduced bank credit.”
The CHP leader reiterated his support for producers and workers, adding, “Our goal is shared prosperity and fair wealth distribution. This government has failed to protect the vulnerable.”
Continuing Activities “Despite Threats”
When asked whether his presence in Beyoğlu after the recent attack carried a political message, Özel responded, “These events were pre-scheduled. What happened cannot stop our activities. All CHP leaders throughout history have faced such challenges.”
Message of Unity: “We All Support the Same National Team”
Concluding his speech, Özel said, “We all support the same national team,” stressing the need for national solidarity to overcome the current crises.
