Preliminary Assessment Released on the Sındırgı Earthquake
Researchers from the Earthquake Research and Application Center of Afyon Kocatepe University conducted field investigations in the Sındırgı district of Balıkesir province and released their initial findings regarding the August 10 earthquake.
The study, carried out over three days using GPS systems, evaluated crustal deformations and the status of faults in the region. The obtained data indicate that this earthquake did not cause significant or permanent deformations in the Earth’s crust.
Monitoring all active faults in the area and data recorded by fixed GPS stations also show that no major deformation occurred near or away from the faults.
At the moment of the earthquake, approximately 2 cm of crustal displacement was recorded, and more detailed investigations on this matter are still ongoing.
Based on this assessment, the active faults in the region have the potential to produce earthquakes with magnitudes between 6.5 and 7, but no evidence of imminent activity has been observed.
