Shamsi Tabrizi Mausoleum Opened in Hoy
The Shamsi Tabrizi Mausoleum in the city of Hoy, West Azerbaijan Province, was opened in an official ceremony with the participation of Iranian officials, Turkish diplomats, and representatives of various countries.
The ceremony was attended by Iran’s Minister of Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts, the Governor of West Azerbaijan, Turkey’s Consul General in Urmia, the Cultural and Tourism Counselor of the Turkish Embassy in Tehran, and a group of representatives of various countries, religious figures, and Iranian artists.
During the opening, the construction stages of the Shamsi Tabrizi Mausoleum—designed with geometric brickwork and inspiration from the shape of the Mevlevi cap, with the green space in front giving the building a special appearance—were shown to those present via a large screen. The program also highlighted the historical importance of Shamsi Tabrizi and his deep spiritual bond with Mevlana Jalaluddin Muhammad Balkhi (Rumi). The famous Iranian singer Muhammad Motamedi also performed three special musical pieces.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, in a message on the occasion of the opening of this mausoleum, stated: The name of Shamsi Tabrizi is another link in the unbreakable bond between Azerbaijan and Iran. Relying on this historical bond, Hoy can achieve its deserved place in Iran and the world not only as the location of Shams’s mausoleum, but also as a center for research and re-reading of the legacy of Shams and Mevlana.
Iran’s Minister of Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts also said in his speech: Iran is like a magnet that gathers us together. From Mashhad to Hoy, the spirit of Iran can be seen, and Shamsi Tabrizi is part of this spirit.
The Cultural and Tourism Counselor of the Turkish Embassy in Tehran, on the sidelines of the ceremony, stated: Today we have gathered to open the Shamsi Tabrizi monument in the city of Hoy. In this ceremony, we repeatedly mentioned Hoy and Konya. Undoubtedly, speaking of Shams also reminds one of Mevlana. Shams, due to his personality, was not a figure who received much attention or recognition; however, with the opening of this place, after Konya, the second place attributed to him has also come into being.
Iran’s Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts has also registered the Shamsi Tabrizi Mausoleum in the city of Hoy on the country’s national list of monuments.
It should be noted that Shamsi Tabrizi, one of the prominent figures of Islamic mysticism, was born in Tabriz in 1185 AD and lived until 1248. Shams’s acquaintance with Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi created a profound transformation in Mevlana’s thought and spiritual world. During his companionship with Mevlana for about three years, Shams left a lasting impact on his mystical outlook and played an important role in shaping ideas based on divine love in his works.
