Signing of a Railway Cooperation Memorandum of Understanding between Iran, Turkey, and Afghanistan
A memorandum of understanding was signed between the Railways of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Turkish State Railways, and the Afghanistan Railway Authority with the aim of expanding mutual cooperation in the railway sector.
This memorandum was signed by Jabbarali Zakari, Deputy Minister of Roads and Urban Development and CEO of Iran Railways; Veysi Kurt, Chairman of the Board and Director General of the Turkish State Railways; and Mohammad Ishaq Sahibzada, Deputy Minister of Public Works and Head of the Afghanistan Railway Authority.
According to this document, the three countries emphasized deepening bilateral and trilateral cooperation, increasing the efficiency of existing infrastructure and routes, facilitating technical and operational border-crossing processes, maximizing transport capacity, strengthening regional integration, and establishing a sustainable railway corridor.
The five-year memorandum also includes plans for sharing knowledge and expertise in areas such as human resource development, maintenance, upgrading and operation of railway infrastructure, digitalization of railways, capacity allocation, and traffic management. Reciprocal technical visits for senior managers and experts will also form part of this cooperation.
In conclusion, the parties stressed the continuation of consultations and the development of cooperation in infrastructural, technical, and educational fields.
