The passing of Seri Surya Aundar, Turkey’s parliamentary deputy
Sırrı Süreyya Önder, Deputy Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey and representative of the Democracy and Equality Party (DEM), passed away at the age of 61 due to multiple organ failure after being hospitalized for 18 days at Florence Nightingale Hospital in Istanbul.
According to the hospital statement, Sırrı Süreyya Önder was transferred to the hospital in critical condition and suffering from cardiac arrest on April 15. He underwent emergency heart surgery and was treated with supportive devices, but unfortunately, his health gradually deteriorated.

Funeral and memorial program
The funeral of this prominent politician will be held on May 5 in Istanbul. The memorial programs include an official ceremony at the Atatürk Cultural Center, followed by the procession from Barbaros Hayreddin Pasha Mosque to Zincirlikuyu Cemetery. Additionally, symbolic ceremonies will be held in his hometown, Adıyaman, and several other cities in Turkey.

President Erdoğan, in his condolence message, described Sırrı Süreyya Önder as a “defender of national unity and a moderate figure.” Meanwhile, Speaker Kurtulmuş emphasized his “humble personality and respectful demeanor” in a statement. Opposition parties, including CHP and MHP, also expressed their condolences through separate messages.

Political and artistic background
Sırrı Süreyya Önder, recognized as a multifaceted figure in filmmaking, writing, and politics, played a key role in Turkey’s peace process. His film *International* won the Best Film award at the Adana Film Festival in 2007. In recent years, he served as a member of parliament and deputy parliamentary speaker.

The United Nations and the European Union, in separate statements, expressed their condolences on the passing of Sırrı Süreyya Önder and praised his significant role in promoting political dialogue.
