Turkish Ministry of National Defense: Unknown Drone Shot Down in National Airspace
The Ministry of National Defense of the Republic of Turkey announced in a statement that on December 15, 2025, an unidentified drone entered Turkish airspace from the direction of the Black Sea. Following its detection, all relevant units initiated identification, classification, and interception procedures in accordance with laws and standard operational directives.
Due to the drone’s technical characteristics — including flight altitude, speed, small dimensions, and low radar cross-section — detection proved difficult. Accordingly, multi-source data from radar, electro-optical systems, electronic warfare units, and early warning systems were simultaneously analyzed and cross-checked.
The findings indicated that the drone had gone out of control. To ensure air security and protect the lives and property of citizens, Turkish Air Force F-16 fighter jets intercepted the aircraft. After completing all legal and operational procedures, the drone was shot down in a controlled manner at a suitable location. The crash site was announced as being between Eldemdağ and Çankırı.
The Ministry further emphasized in its statement:
“Given the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia and its implications for Black Sea security, both countries were warned to exercise greater caution regarding such incidents. We reminded the parties concerned that such violations could threaten regional security.”
The Ministry of National Defense also clarified that no information has been released regarding the exact origin of the drone or any potential cargo it may have carried.
In addition to the drone issue, the Ministry’s weekly press briefing addressed the situation in Syria. It was stressed that Turkey remains committed to the principle of ‘one state, one army’ and will continue close cooperation with the Syrian government. Warnings were also issued concerning the activities of groups affiliated with the PKK and its political-military branch, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDG).
