30 August Victory Day Celebrations in Turkey
The anniversary of the 30 August 1922 Victory (Victory Day), a turning point in Turkey’s War of Independence, was celebrated today across the country with official ceremonies. This day commemorates the decisive victory of the forces under the command of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk over the Greek occupation army, which led to the complete liberation of Anatolia.
The Turkish army’s military operation, which began on 26 August 1922, concluded on 30 August of the same year with the heavy defeat of Greek forces. This victory changed the course of Turkey’s political and military developments and paved the way for the establishment of the Republic.
Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President of Turkey, in a message marking “Victory Day and the Turkish Armed Forces Day,” emphasized: “30 August is not merely a military victory; it is the symbol of the rebirth and continued existence of the Turkish nation. This victory has also been an inspiration for other nations seeking their independence.” He also stressed the importance of preserving national unity and passing on the “torch of independence” to future generations.
Every year, 30 August is a public holiday in Turkey and is commemorated nationwide with military parades, memorial ceremonies, and cultural programs.
