Beginning of the process of electing the Speaker of the Turkish Parliament
With the end of the presidency of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM), the election process for the second term to select a new president will begin on May 28. Numan Kurtulmuş, whose presidency ends on June 7, will be succeeded by the elected individual in this election.
In each legislative term, the Turkish Parliament holds two presidential elections. The first term lasts two years, but the elected individual in the second term remains in office until the end of the same legislative period.
Timing and election process
Candidates must submit their applications to the parliamentary presidency within five days after May 28. Following this, the General Assembly will convene within five days, and a secret ballot will be held.
Due to the Eid al-Adha holiday, the election is expected to take place on June 3 or 4. In the first two rounds, candidates need 400 votes, which is two-thirds of the total members. If no candidate secures an absolute majority (301 votes) in the third round, the top two candidates will proceed to the fourth round, and the candidate who receives the most votes will become the new Speaker of Parliament.
History of the Speakers of the Turkish Parliament
So far, 30 representatives have reached the presidency of the Turkish Parliament. If someone other than Numan Kurtulmuş is elected, they will become the 31st Speaker of Parliament.
