Critical Condition of Manisa Mayor After Electric Shock
Ferit Vergili, the Republican People’s Party (CHP) mayor of Manisa Metropolitan Municipality, was revived by emergency medical intervention after his heart stopped for 70 minutes due to a severe electric shock. He is currently in “stable but critical” condition under intensive care at Hafsâ Sultan Hospital.
Details of the Incident
Vergili was electrocuted while inspecting a malfunctioning pool motor at his private residence. Emergency teams managed to restore his heartbeat after 70 minutes of continuous CPR. Doctors stated, “Reviving the heart after this duration is unprecedented—a miracle—but there is a risk of brain damage.”
Current Condition
His heart is beating without mechanical assistance, but he remains in a medically induced coma. CHP leader Özgür Özel warned in a statement: “Although his condition has improved compared to yesterday, he is still in a critical phase. The first 6-7 minutes after the incident were decisive, and we are now waiting to see how much his brain recovers.”
Official Reactions
Manisa Provincial Health Director Mehmet Fatih Zeren: “After 48 hours of intensive care, his vital signs are stable, but regaining consciousness will take time.” The Manisa Municipality urged the public: “To avoid crowding and noise around the hospital out of respect for other patients.”
Political Background
Elected in the 2024 local elections with 57.29% of the vote, Vergili made history as CHP’s first mayor in Manisa in 74 years. He is known for his resilient spirit.
