Extensive Weather System: Rain, Snow, and Fog in Several Provinces of Turkey
The weather system was accompanied by heavy rain and storms. According to the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, rainfall between 5 and 67 liters per square meter was recorded in different areas. Municipal units, deploying extensive personnel and equipment, responded to hundreds of calls related to the rainfall. In Küçükçekmece, flooding in the parking lot of a shopping complex damaged vehicles and construction equipment, and water drainage operations were carried out by the fire department.
In Alanya, heavy rainfall caused flooding in some workplaces and the formation of water pools in beltway underpasses. Trapped vehicles were removed with the assistance of firefighters, and accumulated water in blocked areas was drained.
In Van, rainfall that began in the morning turned into snow in the Başkale district. Drivers faced difficulties in elevated areas, and precautionary measures were taken to manage traffic. Snow clearing in the district center and in front of shops was carried out by municipal teams and local residents.
In Kars, dense fog combined with snow reduced drivers’ visibility, and two scheduled flights from Ankara and Istanbul to Kars Harakani Airport were canceled. In the evening, fog intensified in Sarıkamış, reducing visibility on the Kars–Erzurum route to about 50 meters. Traffic authorities issued warnings to drivers about fog and icing. At the same time, on the Kars–Göle highway, snow and fog made transportation difficult, and highway teams began snow removal and salting operations. Some drivers returned to Kars due to adverse conditions.
