Özgür Özel’s Criticism of the Turkish Government’s Economic Policies
In part of his remarks, Özel pointed to the decline in citizens’ purchasing power, stating, “In previous years, employees’ holiday bonuses were enough to buy a whole sheep, but today, the same amount can only buy four kilograms of meat.” The politician noted that the price of a sacrificial sheep had risen from 150 liras in 2022 to 25,000 liras this year, calling this increase disproportionate to wage growth.
In another part of his speech, Özel addressed discrepancies in inflation calculations. According to him, while independent institutions report an annual inflation rate of 71%, official statistics show it at 35%. The CHP leader questioned this stark difference and demanded greater transparency in calculating economic indicators.
Another issue he raised was the living conditions of workers and retirees. Highlighting the decline in real wages, Özel called for additional raises to compensate for inflation’s effects. He also suggested that retirees’ holiday bonuses should be revised according to current economic conditions.

The politician also touched on government accountability, saying, “Election promises must be followed up on. People make decisions based on these promises, and it is only natural for them to expect their fulfillment.”
Before these remarks, Özel had reacted to the recent earthquake in Muğla, offering condolences to affected families and emphasizing the need for stricter safety standards in construction.
Analysts say these statements can be examined within the framework of opposition parties’ political rivalry with the Turkish government. In recent months, economic issues have become a central topic in the country’s political debates.
