Proposal to declare Ashura as a religious holiday in Turkey
In this proposal, Saribal called for amendments to the law on national days and public holidays. In the text submitted to the parliament, he highlighted the importance of Ashura for followers of the Alevi faith and referenced its historical significance.
Ashura, occurring on the 10th day of Muharram, commemorates the events of Karbala and the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS) and his companions, holding great significance in Alevi beliefs. Alevis observe a 12-day fast and mourning period at the beginning of Muharram, while honoring the 10th day by preparing and distributing Ashura porridge, making sacrifices, and visiting family elders.
The submitted proposal emphasized that the free practice of religious rituals is a fundamental right of citizens and must be guaranteed under Turkey’s constitution. Recognizing Ashura could thus be a step toward ensuring religious freedoms and equal rights for all citizens.
In explaining his proposal, Saribal noted that its approval would strengthen social solidarity, increase interfaith respect, and reinforce public trust in government policies.
