Uskudar Municipal Council Member Resigns from Justice and Development Party
In his statement at the council meeting, Baki said: “The escalating pressure against the opposition and my inability to see any signs of this situation improving, along with how this process conflicts with my legal and political principles, compelled me to resign from the Justice and Development Party.”
His remarks were met with applause from those present in the council chamber. Members from the Republican People’s Party (CHP) stood up to applaud and congratulate Baki in support.
Uskudar Mayor Sinem Dedetaş also commented, saying: “I congratulate Mr. Baki for this courageous decision. I hope this choice brings beneficial outcomes both for him and for our country.”
It was reported that following his resignation, Baki would continue his duties on the municipal council as an independent member.
This resignation comes at a time when criticism continues regarding increasing restrictions on opposition groups in Turkey.
