Protests intensify in Türkiye against arrest of Erdogan’s main rival: People in various cities in Turkey are joining widespread protests against Turkey’s ruling party and Recep Tayyip Erdogan himself. These riots began in Istanbul after the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoğlu and are spreading to other cities in Turkey. The Justice and Development Party and the Republican People’s Party of Turkey are long-standing political rivals, and both parties have always tried to seize power in various structures in Turkey. A significant part of the people consider the arrest of the Istanbul mayor a political issue and consider this procedure dangerous for Turkish democracy.
