Turkey Launches Investigation into 6 Major Platforms Over Children’s Privacy
Turkey’s Personal Data Protection Authority (KVKK) has announced the launch of a comprehensive investigation into the management and control of children’s private data on six major social media platforms.
In a written statement, the regulatory body stated that the aim of this move is to protect children from potential risks in the digital environment. In this context, the data processing methods and safety measures for child users on platforms TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, X (formerly Twitter), and Discord will be evaluated.
This development comes after Ankara had previously announced plans to impose restrictions on minors’ access to social media. In line with this, a report prepared in the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM) called for the implementation of more comprehensive measures, including age verification and content filtering.
The ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party), led by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, is expected to submit a draft law on this matter for approval soon.
