Turkey’s Reaction to Statements by Greek Officials
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkey described and rejected as “baseless and arrogant” the recent statements by Greek officials made on the anniversary of the “Asia Minor War,” based on Athens’ historical narrative of a period that Ankara regards as Greece’s attempt to occupy and seize Anatolia, while Greece refers to it as the “Asia Minor Catastrophe.”
In the ministry’s written statement, it was said: “The baseless and arrogant statements of Greek officials, voiced under the pretext of the anniversary of false claims regarding the period of Greece’s attempt to occupy and seize Anatolia, are rejected by us.”
The statement went on to emphasize that these remarks are in contradiction with historical facts and with the efforts of both countries to develop friendly relations.
Furthermore, the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs called on Greek officials to refrain from actions driven by domestic political motives that could lead to tension and hostility between the two nations.
