Turkish Officials’ Reactions to the Start of Disarmament Process for a PKK-Affiliated Group
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan welcomed the “important step” toward the goal of a “terror-free Turkey” in a social media post. He stated, “I hope this step taken toward the goal of a Turkey free from terrorism will bring good and benefit to our country.”
Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan described the process as “a significant and satisfying step toward achieving a terror-free Turkey” and emphasized the government’s determination to remain vigilant until the complete elimination of threats posed by PKK-affiliated groups.
The Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) also supported this move. The MHP, a coalition partner of the government, called this step the result of a “strong and historic will.”
Meanwhile, Justice and Development Party (AKP) spokesperson Ömer Çelik announced that “a critical threshold has been crossed on the path to achieving a terror-free Turkey.”
These developments followed reports of the destruction of weapons belonging to one of the PKK-affiliated groups.
