A massive explosion at Shahid Rajaee Port in Bandar Abbas

On the afternoon of Saturday, April 26, 2025, a massive explosion occurred in the area of Shahid Rajaee Port in Bandar Abbas. The main cause of this explosion is still under investigation. According to reports, 25 people have lost their lives so far, 800 have been injured, several are missing, and extensive damage has been inflicted on the region’s infrastructure.

Cause of the incident

Mehrdad Hassanzadeh, Director General of Crisis Management for Hormozgan Province, announced that the incident was caused by the explosion of chemicals stored in containers at Shahid Rajaee Port. However, the exact type of chemicals has not yet been confirmed. The IRIB news agency denied reports of an ammonia explosion, and the National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company stated that the incident is unrelated to refineries and fuel tanks.
Eyewitnesses reported that the incident began with a minor fire in the vicinity of the port. Due to temperatures exceeding 40 degrees and the accumulation of flammable materials, the fire rapidly spread, leading to an explosion. Firefighting teams from other provinces, as well as helicopters, were dispatched to the site to contain the blaze. The firefighting operation concluded after 20 hours on Sunday morning.

Damages and injuries

This explosion caused extensive financial damage; the windows of surrounding buildings were shattered, and an administrative building was completely destroyed. Emergency forces were dispatched to the site from various parts of the country using ambulances and rescue buses. The Hormozgan Blood Transfusion Center also issued an urgent call for donors.

Domestic: The President, the Speaker of Parliament, the Minister of Interior, and other national officials expressed their condolences and issued urgent orders to investigate the causes of the incident and provide assistance to the victims.
International: Many countries, including Jordan, Turkey, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan, expressed their condolences and sympathy, declaring their readiness to assist Iran.

Update

Kolivand, the head of the Iranian Red Crescent Society, stated that 28 people have died in the explosion at Shahid Rajaee Port. He also mentioned that 20 individuals are currently hospitalized in intensive care units.

President Masoud Pezeshkian, for a field visit and to follow up on the conditions at Shahid Rajaee Port after yesterday’s incident, arrived moments ago (Sunday afternoon, April 27, 2025) at Bandar Abbas International Airport.
