Attack on the leader of Turkey’s Republican People’s Party and investigation details
The attacker’s brother stated in an interview that Tengiyol had psychological issues and a history of violence. He mentioned that their family had had no contact with the attacker for years and had been concerned about his behavior. He also emphasized the importance of investigating the attacker’s connections in Istanbul and raised the possibility of his ties to certain groups.

The attack occurred as Özel was leaving the Atatürk Cultural Center, and the assailant was quickly detained by security personnel. Initial investigations revealed that Tengiyol had a criminal record and had been convicted in 2004 for killing his two children. After serving 20 years in prison, he was conditionally released in 2020.
Police investigations into the attacker’s connections are ongoing, and no terrorist links have been identified so far. According to official reports, he worked as a waiter in a restaurant, and his recent behavior is under close scrutiny.

The incident sparked widespread reactions in Turkey. In his initial statement after the attack, Özgür Özel emphasized the importance of preventing the spread of hostility and hatred, stating that this incident would not instill fear in the Republican People’s Party. The Interior Ministry and judicial authorities confirmed that investigations into the attack would continue extensively.
Turkey’s Minister of Justice also explained the attacker’s judicial record, stating that he had been granted conditional release under old laws and would have remained in prison longer if sentenced under current legislation.
