Azerbaijan Begins Gas Exports to Syria via Turkey
Turkey’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Alparslan Bayraktar, announced the start of natural gas transfers from the Republic of Azerbaijan to Syria through the Turkey-Syria pipeline. Described as a symbol of cooperation between the three countries, this project enables annual gas exports of 2 billion cubic meters.
According to Azerbaijan’s SOCAR oil company, 1.2 billion cubic meters of gas will be sent to Syria annually via this route. This volume of gas can meet the electricity needs of 5 million Syrian households and, according to local officials, will increase daily power supply hours in Syria from 4 to 10 hours.
The gas pipeline begins in Turkey’s Kilis province, enters Aleppo, and extends to the cities of Hama and Homs. Alongside this project, Turkey continues electricity exports to Syria through 8 different routes and plans to double the capacity.
Previously, Turkey and Qatar had attempted to alleviate Syria’s energy shortage by sending power-generating ships to its coasts.
