Europe’s New Year Celebrations Marked by Chaos and Mass Arrests
During New Year’s Eve celebrations across Europe, numerous violent incidents and clashes occurred, resulting in dozens of deaths and injuries, hundreds of vehicles set on fire, and widespread arrests.
Switzerland
In Crans-Montana, a fire at a bar located on a ski slope left 40 people dead and 115 injured, many in critical condition. Following the incident, a state of emergency was declared in the canton of Valais, with helicopters, ambulances, and fire trucks dispatched to the area. Flights over the region were also banned.
France
Despite the deployment of more than 90,000 police officers and gendarmes, New Year’s Eve in France was marred by violence. Reports indicate that over 800 vehicles were set ablaze nationwide and hundreds of people were arrested. In Paris alone, 125 individuals were detained. In Strasbourg, 101 vehicles were burned, 30 people arrested, and 25 police officers injured. In Nice, attacks against security forces left one officer wounded and several vehicles torched. Additionally, in Marseille, a 36-year-old man was fatally stabbed.

Austria
Austria’s Interior Minister announced that 421 people were questioned across the country and 30 arrested. In Vienna, a 14-year-old boy lost a hand after a firecracker exploded. Emergency services in the city responded to more than 1,135 incidents related to New Year’s Eve.
Germany
In Germany, New Year’s Eve incidents claimed 11 lives. In Bielefeld, two 18-year-olds died in separate firework explosions. In Bochum, a blast caused by homemade firecrackers killed a 70-year-old woman. In Würzburg, an 88-year-old woman died in an apartment fire reportedly sparked by fireworks. In the southwest, three people perished in forest fires. In Wiesbaden, a 23-year-old man was fatally stabbed, while in Duisburg, a 67-year-old man suffocated during a fight between two homeless individuals.
England
New Year’s Eve in England also saw violence and arrests. In Cardiff, a 19-year-old man was injured in a fight with three intoxicated teenagers. In Dorset, a 14-year-old boy was arrested for smashing parked car windows. In Blackpool, a 16-year-old was detained for possessing homemade fireworks. In Sussex, police seized a large quantity of drugs and arrested a wanted driver.

Belgium
Belgian police arrested 191 people across three cities on New Year’s Eve. In Brussels, Molotov cocktails were discovered, fireworks were thrown at police and emergency personnel, and public vehicles were damaged. In Antwerp, rescue teams were attacked with stones and fireworks, leading to 100 youths being detained. In Ghent, 28 people were arrested for violating the fireworks ban and attacking police.
Netherlands
In the Netherlands, despite a fireworks ban, widespread fires and clashes broke out. Police shot a man armed near Utrecht. Two people died and dozens were injured in related incidents, many of them children suffering eye injuries. Authorities expect a nationwide fireworks ban to be enforced next year.
Poland
Polish police responded to more than 15,000 incidents on New Year’s Eve. Two people died in separate fires, and 333 were arrested. Additionally, 34 traffic accidents resulted in two deaths and 42 injuries. More than 100 drivers were found to be under the influence of alcohol.
