The 39th Istanbul Provincial Congress of the Republican People’s Party to Be Held
The Supreme Election Council of Turkey (YSK) has rejected the Republican People’s Party’s (CHP) request to cancel the 39th Ordinary Provincial Congress in Istanbul.
Ekrem Özubek, Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Election Council, announced that the congress will be held tomorrow as scheduled and that there are no obstacles to the continuation of the process.
According to reports, the Supreme Election Council convened at 14:00 to review the request of the 45th Civil Court of First Instance in Istanbul. The court had previously sent a letter to the Sarıyer 1st District Election Board stating that “due to the binding nature of the previous ruling, it is not possible to hold the congress.”
Following the meeting, Özubek told reporters: “The Sarıyer 1st District Election Board sought the opinion of the Supreme Election Council regarding the suspension of the congress. In today’s session, our board decided that a congress process which has been duly initiated cannot be halted by district election boards. This decision is hereby announced to the public.”
In response to a question about the fate of the congress, he emphasized: “A decision has been made to proceed with the congress. The process that has begun will continue in accordance with procedure, and this decision will be communicated to all political parties and relevant institutions.”
The 39th Ordinary Provincial Congress of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) in Istanbul is part of the party’s internal process to elect its provincial chairmanship and administration, and holds particular significance due to Istanbul’s political importance. The request for cancellation was raised by some CHP members, citing a previous ruling of the 45th Civil Court of First Instance in Istanbul, which had temporarily suspended party activities in the province. The plaintiffs argued that until the case concerning the validity of the previous congress is resolved, holding a new congress would be unlawful.
