Trump’s Economic Offensive Against India Comes Into Effect
The United States’ 50% tariff on imports from India, imposed at the order of U.S. President Donald Trump, came into force on Wednesday. This decision was made as Indian officials urged citizens to prioritize buying domestically produced goods.
This tariff is regarded as the highest rate imposed by Trump on any Asian country and is said to aim at countering India’s purchase of oil from Russia. Previously, the implementation of this policy which could have doubled India’s export volume to the U.S. had been delayed to allow time for negotiations between the two countries. However, planned trade talks for this week have now been canceled.
Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India, speaking to a crowd in Ahmedabad, Gujarat state, on Monday, referred to U.S. pressure, stating: “No matter how much pressure is applied, we will strengthen our ability to confront it.” He urged citizens to adopt the slogan “Whatever we buy must be Made in India” as the guiding principle of their economic behavior, adding: “We must become self-reliant not out of compulsion, but out of pride.”
According to analysts, this approach aligns with the Indian government’s policy of supporting domestic production and reducing dependence on foreign imports. Experts also warn that these tariffs could have far-reaching effects on bilateral trade and accelerate the growth of domestic manufacturing in India.
