Turkey Rises to Fourth Place in Europes Electric Vehicle Market
Turkey became the fourth largest market for these vehicles in Europe in 2024, with sales of approximately 190,000 fully electric cars, following Germany, the United Kingdom, and France.
The share of fully electric vehicles in new car sales in Turkey reached 17% for the first time, equaling the European Union average.
The approximately 80% growth in electric vehicle sales last year propelled Turkey ahead of countries such as Norway, the Netherlands, and Belgium.
However, electric vehicles still account for only about 2% of Turkey’s vehicle fleet on the road, and this sales growth has not yet had a significant impact on reducing dependence on energy imports; indeed, gasoline consumption and crude oil imports have increased during the same period.
Ufuk Alparslan, Regional Director for Turkey and the Caucasus at Ember, cited the entry of affordable models aligned with tax incentives as the main reasons for the sales growth and emphasized that Turkey has significant potential to reduce energy imports through the development of clean energy and the expansion of electric vehicle use.
