Israel’s Attack on the Mâdleen Ship: Turkish Activists Among Those Detained
Israeli forces yesterday attacked the Mâdleen ship, which was carrying humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza, in international waters. The ship, organized by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, had set sail from Italy toward Gaza and was seized by Israeli commandos despite its explicitly stated civilian nature.
Attack Details and Presence of Turkish Activists
Reports indicate that Israeli forces raided the ship using a white chemical liquid and cut off its communication with the outside world. Among the 12 activists on board were Turkish citizen Hüseyin Şuayb Ordu and German-Turkish activist Yasemin Acar.
In a video released before communications were cut, Yasemin Acar said:
“We have no weapons, only humanitarian aid for the people of Gaza. This is a war crime!”

Reactions and Implications
The Freedom Flotilla Coalition stated in a declaration that all activists, including Turkish participants, were forcibly detained and taken to Israel.
Israel claimed the ship intended to breach Gaza’s “maritime exclusion zone” and that those detained would be deported to their home countries.
Turkish authorities have not yet issued an official response to the incident, but Ankara is expected to condemn the action.
Background of Tensions
This incident recalls Israel’s 2010 attack on the Mavi Marmara ship, in which 10 Turkish citizens were killed, straining Turkey-Israel relations for years. The presence of Turkish activists on the Mâdleen ship could reignite diplomatic tensions.
Status of Humanitarian Aid
The Mâdleen ship was carrying food and medical supplies for Gaza, which is facing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis under Israel’s severe blockade. The UN has warned that 2.3 million Palestinians are on the brink of famine.
