Fifth Wave Expands: Number of Detentions Rises to 38
In the ongoing financial investigation into the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB), launched upon orders from high-ranking authorities, the fifth wave of judicial operations has seen an increase in detentions. According to the latest reports, arrest warrants have been issued for 49 individuals, with 38 detained so far.
The investigation, which covers four separate cases including “financial corruption,” “a criminal organization led by İzzetullah Aktaş,” and financial misconduct in the Beşiktaş and Büyükçekmece municipalities, initially issued arrest warrants for 47 people. However, this number later rose to 49.
Among those detained are former Republican People’s Party (CHP) MP Aykut Erdoğdu, as well as district mayors including Hikmet Bahçetepe (Gaziosmanpaşa), Turan Çakar (Avcılar), Hasan Akgün (Büyükçekmece), Kadir Aydar (Ceyhan), and Uğur Tekin (Sihan).
The operation, part of a broader investigation into alleged financial irregularities in local governments, is still ongoing.
