Ilham Aliyev: The Zangezur Corridor in Azerbaijan is nearing completion
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, speaking at the Seventh Consultative Meeting of Central Asian Heads of State in Tashkent, announced that the construction of the Zangezur Corridor on Azerbaijani territory is approaching completion. He described the project as part of joint regional efforts to strengthen connectivity and enhance the geopolitical and geoeconomic role of Central Asia and the South Caucasus.
Aliyev highlighted the historical and cultural ties between Azerbaijan and the Central Asian countries, stressing that these relations have now taken on new dimensions through strategic cooperation and formal agreements. He added that such cooperation not only helps preserve their shared heritage but also contributes to economic development and greater regional stability.
The Azerbaijani president also referred to the reconstruction process in the liberated territories and expressed gratitude for the support of Central Asian countries in this regard. He underlined that Azerbaijan and Central Asia, as a bridge between East and West and North and South, play a significant role in the development of the Middle Corridor. According to him, modernization of transport and logistics infrastructure, harmonization of customs procedures, and their digitalization will create new opportunities to expand trade volumes, strengthen economic stability, and broaden cooperation in global markets.
Aliyev further pointed to the recent agreement with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan at a trilateral summit hosted by U.S. President Donald Trump, noting that this accord could facilitate transit routes between mainland Azerbaijan and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. Concluding his remarks, Aliyev stated: “The construction of the Zangezur Corridor on Azerbaijani soil is nearing completion. In its initial phase, the route will have a cargo capacity of 15 million tons and will become one of the main arteries of the Middle Corridor.”
This statement underscores that the Zangezur Corridor project holds strategic importance not only for Azerbaijan but also for the entire Central Asian and South Caucasus region, with the potential to strengthen regional cooperation and enhance the global role of this area.
