Northern Cyprus election result announced
The presidential election of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) was held on Sunday. According to the announced results, Tufan Erhürman, leader of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP), won with 62.76 percent of the votes and was introduced as the new president of the country. The Supreme Election Board reported a turnout of 64.87 percent in this round. His main rival, Ersin Tatar, the former president and leader of the National Unity Party, received 35.81 percent of the votes.
Under the electoral law of the TRNC, any candidate who secures more than half of the valid votes is considered elected in the first round. This was the ninth presidential election in the country’s history and was contested by eight candidates.
Erhürman’s victory was welcomed by senior officials in Turkey. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, in a congratulatory message, emphasized that Ankara would always stand by the people of the TRNC and that cooperation between the two sides would continue in all fields. Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz also congratulated Erhürman, stressing the importance of strengthening bilateral relations and coordination in foreign policy. In addition, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan declared that Turkey would continue to defend the legitimate rights of the people of Northern Cyprus and would stand alongside the new government in the process of resolving the Cyprus issue.
